About
Biography
Born in 1992, Vorster grew up on a family farm in the mountains of the North-Eastern Cape where her playground was exploring farmlands, mountains and caves. She matriculated from DSG in Grahamstown, then attended Vega in Cape Town and graduated with a BA in Visual Communications. Thereafter, she worked and travelled in South-East Asia and basing herself in Hanoi, Vietnam, founded the Hanoi Life Drawing Society where she coordinated drawing workshops and exhibitions for a community of global creatives. This is where she solidified her calling as an artist. Coming back to South Africa, she enrolled at the University of the Free State completing her honours in Fine Art, specialising in installation (Cum Laude). Her upbringing and travels infused her thinking and art practice with a deep curiosity to constantly question and expand the territory of her own mind.
Artist Statement
Vorster’s work is a manifestation of her personal spiritual pursuit. Her work weaves between ideologies taught in institutions and that which is learnt through an authentic lived experience. Her affinity to natural materials, such as charcoal, hessian, wood and copper, make up her sculptural works. Often, these works question their role as art or as power objects. Her method of drawing invokes layers of expressive mark-making which seek to capture the elusive and unseen. These drawings often contextualise sculptural works into landscapes that invite viewers to explore the intricate territories of their own mind. Her performances aim to transform and elevate the human spirit by creating introspective experiences that require stillness and consistency.
